The case was known throughout the British Isles, and Sir Wilde was ridiculed. He never fully recovered, eventually retreated from life, and died in 1876. We do not know exactly how Wilde reacted throughout his life to his father’s infidelities and this court case, but it seems an eerie parallel to Wilde’s own eventual demise. Aside from his position as perhaps the first “modern man” and the scandal surrounding the end of his life, Wilde is remembered as a kind and loving father to his two sons.

Intellectual pursuits were seen as a method for the New Woman to improve herself and gain a greater foothold within the civic world (Ohio State University 1). It is obvious through his writings that Wilde saw the education of a woman as not a pursuit of particular worth. Neither Gwendolen nor Cecily appear to possess any great intellect, although not much can be said for any of the other characters either. Gwendolen swiftly informs Cecily that “Mamma, whose views on education are extremely strict, has brought me up to be extremely shortsighted; it is part of her system” (Wilde 2,206).

The remainder of this section will discuss some of the notable elements of Wilde’s work: the patterns in his use of themes, his construction of character, the history and context of his writing, the philosophy underlying his literature, the many experiments he did with the forms his stories took, and his use of symbolism, imagery, and language. Themes There is often an outsider, or a suggestion of those living on the fringes of society, in Wilde’s work. Wilde’s position as an Irishman in England and a homosexual in the 19th century seems to have solidified his focus on themes regarding the outsider.
