Ripples, reflecting a kaleidoscope of hues, are often more interesting. A fast shutter speed freezes this wave pattern, while a long exposure can blur the water’s surface into a beautiful sheen. The first from the Grand Canyon (3) shows shaded water reflecting sunlight cliffs and sky. In this case the textured water is more effective than a smooth mirror. The second photograph, from the east side of the Sierra Nevada (4), depicts sunlit aspen trees reflected in a creek. Here a slow shutter speed smoothed the water’s ripples.
Finding the Essence To find the essence of your subject, ask yourself what caught your eye in the first place. What compelled you to make the photograph? These three photographs of Half Dome are all different, but each one includes only the essential elements. In the first image, the light and clouds around Half Dome were interesting enough by themselves—I didn’t need anything else. So I used a telephoto lens to fill the frame with just the rock and clouds. In the second version I wanted to juxtapose two objects, Half Dome and the backlit dogwood leaves.
This workflow is also a better choice if your other software can’t do routine tasks like dodging and burning, or lacks curves. If you know you’re going to take an image into Photoshop, it’s better to make only minimal adjustments in other software, as this leaves you with more flexibility later. All you really need to do is get the white balance close, and make sure you’re bringing as much highlight and shadow detail as possible into Photoshop. Some sharpening may also be needed for Raw images, or JPEGs with minimal sharpening applied in the camera.
